Next-Generation Biomarker Testing
PEth-POINT: point-of-care testing for objective alcohol
Lifespan Technologies is developing next-generation PEth testing tools to support objective detection of alcohol exposure.
Our work includes a rapid lateral flow immunoassay for PEth detection and dried blood spot cards containing whole blood with known amounts of PEth. Together, these tools are designed to help expand access to practical alcohol biomarker testing for pre-clinical, research, and public health use.
A New Approach to PEth Detection
PEth forms in red blood cell membranes when ethanol is present. Because it can remain detectable for weeks, PEth offers a meaningful window into alcohol exposure beyond traditional short-term markers.
Lifespan’s technology aims to make PEth detection more accessible while preserving the reliability needed for serious research and clinical applications.

Dried Blood Spot Cards
Convenient PEth Materials
Lifespan is developing dried blood spot cards with five spots and whole blood containing known amounts of PEth. We are developing at least three primary DBS card formats:
(I) 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanol (POPEth, PEth (16:0/18:1),
(II) Deuterated D5-POPEth, and
(III) Naturally formed PEth– that contains multiple PEth species.

These materials are intended to provide convenient, useful tools for PEth assay development and research workflows. Products are Research Use Only (RUO). Not approved for human diagnostic use.
